The Gordon Place caught me off guard how good it was. When I started it, I thought it was going to just be another haunted house thriller that relys on all the standard tropes. I’ve read/listened to a lot of these stories and I admit to being a bit jaded. As the first few chapters played out, I thought I knew exactly where this story was going, what the tension would be, and how it would be improbably extended for the duration of the book. Not necessarily how it ends , but enough of the structure that it would be boring.

Then it resolved the tension and all the story that I was expecting it to be about 20% of the way in, and everything that followed was an exciting ride and I couldn’t wait to keep listening every time I had to step away. In particular, I liked the characters quite a bit. Afia and Staff were a great combination. Graham Gordon and his father’s relationship was compelling. The way the characters bounced off of each other was always interesting.

I didn’t love the narrator. At times he was excellent. He managed to pull off believable female characters. At other times the performance was a little distracting. But overall, it didn’t take away from the story too much. I wouldn’t suggest not listening to this audiobook.

I would absolutely recommend Isaac Thorne’s The Gordon Place! This is the first time I’ve read his work, but I look forward to finding more!
