Evangeline a retired assassin and fallen angel is sucked back into the supernatural power games when she is accused of murder and basically framed. She has a week to prove her innocence and is forced to pair up with Xai an ex that she has a long history with in order to so. From learning more and more of their shared history and the machinations of those in the shadows there is plenty of content to be intriguing.

The narration by Sarah Puckett was very good, and I enjoyed her pacing, delivery and range of voices for the characters. All of the characters have distinct voices and can interact and distinguished from one another very easily. Tristan Hunt is overall solid as well, but this book showcases Sarah’s talents much more and she can carry the narration with ease.

Overall the story has an interesting world, ideas and great narration, but sometimes got bogged down in interpersonal drama. It was still intriguing and entertaining and I liked Evangeline but wished some of the doubt and second-guessing was resolved earlier or not focused on as much. I think fans of PNR will enjoy the book, and there is enough here that urban fantasy fans should enjoy it as well. The next books can definitely build on the world and characters to make a more fleshed out and absorbing universe.
