I listened to this book straight through over a few days and generally enjoyed it. The first half of the book was strong, the character building was decent and even though there were a few tropes, I brushed them off and continued listening to how this family was going to survive the apocalypse. The narration was on-par with other quality narrators, but while Kevin is no R.C. Bray, he’s still pretty good at what he does. My issue comes with the second half of the book where our main character is struggling with the emotions and feelings he’s having over having to do the things he does to protect his family and starts turning towards religion for strength. While I’m okay with this most of the time, it gets laid on pretty thick in a few parts where it could have been applied a little less liberally.
Overall I enjoyed the book, but the thick religious references at the end of the book were a little off-putting to me and just didn’t seem necessary in the places that they were inserted.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
