I’m a young woman who is just beginning a career in programming and picked this up to see what I’m getting into. This book left me feeling very optimistic and excited to enter this field! You get to hear all about the history of coding, interviews with people in the industry and stories of programming pioneers. I liked the narration and never felt bored.

Some people in the reviews seem to complain about the author’s political views, but I don’t think they’re that bad. He does talk about the fact that coding is an industry dominated by white men, even though it was a career targeted at women at one point in history, and posits why/how/when that changed. Personally I find that interesting and not offensive or uncomfortable to think about.

Overall I would mostly recommend this to anyone interested in learning to code. It’s a good jump-off point to see how things began, how far they’ve come, and what the future holds.
