Okay, I tried to read this book several times. But the editing was so bad with missed words and horrible verb tense issues that I could never get very far before I’d put it away. However, I kept wanting to read it. A few rec’s of the audiobook and I downloaded it a couple days ago. I’m SO glad I did. Joel Leslie’s voice made the words flow and I fell in love with SJ Himes Boston.

So, my review is for the audiobook and the audiobook only. If I had to review the book? The rating would have been much lower due to all the issues.

This story is a wonderful urban fantasy. The lead, a Necromancer, is feared, revered, or hated by the other supernaturals of Boston. And someone who hates him is set on taking him out. How do you take out a sorcerer who can control death? That’s a good question. And annoying to the enemy when he keeps not dying.

I enjoyed the characters, though I hope his little brother gets a better attitude in the next book. He bugged me.

So aces to the narration. Leslie did excellent voices for each character (I would so bear my neck for the master of the vampire clan – yum), but Simeon and Angel’s voices were absolutely wonderful.

The story lost a little for me in the Scooby Doo’esque reveal before the climax as Angel revealed all. However, I still love it. And I look forward to listening to book 2. (I can only hope book 3 goes to audio as well.)

There is one large mistake on a name. Milly, Angel’s teaching partner and longtime friend was introduced as Mildred. Then a couple chapters later she became Millicent. That’s pure author error. But as long as you can overlook that. I seriously, highly suggest this audiobook.

Oh, and one final thing – I so love Arock (And I’m sure I got it spelled wrong, but this is the dragon demon). I want my own Arock… though in his dragon form, not the demon one 😉
