While Gun Meister Online starts out great, Barnett derails the story a bit. The main character in ‘the game’ Gun Meister Online, not Charlie and that’s the main struggle. Subplots are left unresolved and long stretches are about action scenes and combat rather than character development. This might sound harsh, but it was a bit grating for such a long audiobook.
Barnett is a brilliant writer of scenes and voices of characters though. The descriptions are flavourful and even the sex scenes are tasteful.
4/5 for story.
The performance is brilliant though. Ellicott, James, and Hays are all excellent and really bring the flair to this story. Without them, I wouldn’t have picked this up.
