Bonnie L. Price has created a fun and engaging tale, the sort that made me want to binge until completion. There’s fantastic world building and character development. Mixed with that are RPG elements, intrigues, and plenty of sexual tension. The romance elements are definitely there with some sexual themes. Sexual-type encounters are handled briefly without moving into the realm of erotica. The book dedicates much more time to the teasing and build up, then warping you to afterward (not unlike how things are often handled in video games … alien sideboob and cut to laying in bed). Bottom like is the pace is overall very good, you care what happens to major characters, and you want to see how the world evolves. The only thing that feels discordant is how abrupt the book ending/cliff-hanger feels. It felt very rushed right at the end. However, this doesn’t change the fact I loved the book and am very much looking forward to continuing the series. Highly recommended for readers who like several genres, including fantasy, LitRPG, adventure, or even light romance.
Narration by the Annie Ellicott, Jeff Hays, and the rest of the Soundbooth Theater folks is always top-notch. Their work adds wonderful depth to any audiobook. I give extra consideration to anything narrated by this group.
