The MC has some typical fantasy cliches of making the same mistakes over and over ending up in stupid situations that could be avoided. The side characters and setting of the story are very interesting with great potential and I hope that the better characters will influence the MC in positive ways. The repeated/inconsistent use of “officer/former officer” in the earlier portions of the book is a bit grating, but improves towards the end. The magic system could use some explanations, but has interesting concepts that could be explored further in the future. I am excited to see where the series will go and will definitely check out future entries in the series.
The narration is excellent, with great pacing consistent voices and an extremely clear and pleasant tones that get you past any of the rough edges in the story while keeping it enjoyable.
