The idea of taking Space Force serious enough to exist, let alone imagine a use for, was a great idea, and the misfit troupe of characters made it like “The A Team fights space invaders.” The characters are crisply written and a lot of love went into making them believable – except when they were obviously conversing with the author. That got pretty old in the latter half of the book and took oxygen away from the story about the aliens. At one point, on an alien ship, the characters examined exactly one room of the ship and spent the entire time quipping, to the point where a main character ordered them to stop quipping.
That said, the fun is throughout the book and it enjoys not being taken seriously. I chuckled a lot at the funny quips, and Stone reminded me a lot of Archer, so that works well. Hope there’s a sequel.
