First of all, Soundbooth Theater always makes an awesome production. It’s easy to give a book a few extra stars just due to their performance, but I just can’t do that in this case.

I just couldn’t get into this book as I thought should, and for the life of me I couldn’t put my finger on it at first. It was a lot of little things, and then I realized the problem. It’s the game mechanics. They don’t feel consistent, and sometimes goes against the rules of the game as previously laid out. For instance, the MC makes an attack that uses all of his 1K mana, and seconds later he expends 700 extra mana, without any explanation as to where it came from. When you’re reading a book, you have to suspend your beliefs and delve into this new fantasy setting and accept the new. But when the rules of the universe aren’t consistent, you start to see little holes in the tapestry of the story. Most of the time you can ignore them, but sometimes there are one too many and you think to yourself ‘I don’t believe this could happen’. Once you hit that point, you start looking at things harder. The more I listened, the more items didn’t seem to make sense, and that just killed the story for me.

If you are able to ignore all of that, you might have a better listen than I did, but all that I can give this is an OK review score.
