Partially because I’m lazy and partially because I think it would be silly to say the same things that someone already said, the review titled “For Beginners” is spot on.

Some additional things I had problems with: The character Miller is highly annoying. I kept hoping he would die. Partially because of the actual writing of the character and how ridiculous he is and partially because of how horrible the voice that Jeff Hays used for him is. Aside from Miller, Jeff Hays does great with the voices of other characters. But Miller sounds like a really bad Schwarzenegger impression.

The other annoyance was Augustus. He just dumps Lee into this world with little to no explanation, and his only incentive for Lee to get him followers is “do it or you’ll never be able to go home”. I would expect a bit more incentive from a god wanting followers and a bit more explanation of why followers should want to worship him. I don’t think I’m doing a very good job of explaining, but overall I think the whole “get me followers” thing was poorly thought out and poorly written.

That said… though there were quite a few things that bothered me about the book… I kept listening. I thought about chucking it a few times, but it was good enough to keep my attention. And it got better in the second half of the book. I will most likely pick up the next book in the series and give it a shot.
