I was expecting a more level intensive, monster-grinding novel; however, the story is much more focused on character development, relationships, and world building. There is also plenty of interesting magic, combat, and loot as well. Jeff Hays was brilliant as always. This was a fantastic introduction to a new series and I already bought the sequels.
