This is listed as the first book in the John Pickett Mysteries series – however, there is a novella, which is a prequel to this book, which provides background on John Pickett and begins when John was 14 years old. This book is a standalone book and it is not necessary to have read the prequel book. There are a few references from the prequel but nothing which would inhibit your understanding of this book. However, the prequel and this book are both very good and if you are thinking about reading this book [and why would you hesitate, I don’t know], start with the prequel.

The prequel book ends when John is 19 years old. This book begins when he is 24 years old and working for the Bow Street Runners. Lady Fieldhurst discovers her husband murdered. John is called to the scene and decides fairly quickly, despite misgivings from everyone else, that Lady Fieldhurst is not the culprit and he must prove her innocent. Although his decision making may be a bit clouded as he is completely taken with her — but it’s completely one-sided.

The writing is well done — with some humor, good historical descriptions/references and very good character development. There are several suspects and some red herrings to keep you guessing.

The narrator, Joel Froomkin, is a great fit for this book. He does voices for all of the characters and his pace/tone is perfect. He definitely adds to the enjoyment of this book.
