Sam is in Boston to bring his estranged daughter home because her mom is having surgery. He hasn’t seen her in years and knows it’s going to be tough, but what he didn’t expect was for an attack to happen and the grid to go down. With little to no working vehicles, how is Sam going to travel a country gripped by fear.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this! I read a lot of PA fiction and it’s hard to make a book stand out, but this author managed it. This book centers more on the characters journey than the PA event. I loved that it took a while for everyone to fully realise that yes, there has been an attack and yes, nothing will ever be the same again. Plus, even though Sam is a former Navy Seal, he isn’t a prepper and isn’t totally prepared for every eventuality! It just felt easier to believe. I also loved that Sam is able to act and do what ever’s needed without overthinking things.

The characters were what I loved the most. We really get a sense of who they are. Sam is a tough, no nonsense guy. Sam’s daughter, Anna, is angry with her dad but she also realises that he is the only way she will get home. Sam and Anna team up with some other characters, who were all well written and developed too, though not all of them were likable…. Lisa!! Gosh, she was so annoying and I felt for the others!! Lol. Also Annas’ granfather!! I’m intrigued to know more about him but from what I saw, he is a controlling piece of ……!!

In all, this was a character driven post apocalyptic read, which I do enjoy!! It was fast paced and held my attention till the end. There were some cliche moments, like with the gang, but I kind of expect things like that from a PA book. When I finished it, I did want to jump into book 2 to see what happens so I do hope it comes to audio soon!

When I think of Kevin Pierce, I think of Post Apocalyptic fiction because it’s what he excels in. He has read so many of the books like this that it’s hard to come up with new things to say about him 😉 Here he was clear and easy to listen to. He had plenty of tones and voices for the different characters and he even reads the female parts well. He is able to grab a person and immerse them in the world and is able to bring it to life.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
