Based upon all of the ads I saw for this book, I was expecting something genuinely hilarious. I’ve read plenty books that made me laugh to the point where my sides hurt. This was not one of those books.
This book’s humor relied too much on the same overused “censored words” joke to the point where it just became annoying. After a chapter or two, I was thinking, “Okay. We get it. Not funny any more.” There were only one or two points in the story that got a real chuckle.
Towards the end of the book, I was just ready for it to be done. Again, the book wasn’t terrible, but the comparisons to Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett are off-base. Those guys are on a completely different level of observational and narrative humor whereas the humor in Space Team was mostly superficial. Unfortunately, this resulted in no real “flashbulb” moments or quotable scenes.
Anyhow, if you’re looking for a great comedy book that you’ll likely read again, look elsewhere. If you want a borderline funny book with a mildly interesting story and lowbrow humor, pick up Space Team. I’ve read worse.
