Charles Dean knows how to keep up the pace and still give his characters the time to develop and grow. I really enjoyed the new characters, Jade and Maedbhbd (whatever). The former being a welcome “fourth wall”-breaking bit of comic relief; the latter being a mysterious, murderous leader of an army of shapeshifters. Jeff Hays is, as always, in top form, bringing the story to life in a way that few narrators can. Annie Ellicott returns to reprise her role as Brigid and also to take over the role of the System messages, which feels a bit strange at first, but it ends up feeling more like a distinct character as Lee and the System interact.
Overall, this third installment continues and progresses the story nicely. If you haven’t started this series, it’s a great listen; well structured, well written, and wonderfully produced and executed by Soundbooth Theater.
